Subtle Asian Baking Members Raise Over $15,000 with Global Bake Sales to help #StopAsianHate
From March to April 2021, members of the Subtle Asian Baking (SAB) group, ran bake sales around the globe and donated proceeds to help #stopasianhate. By April 8th, 2021, over 202 people had donated to the #bakeinsolidarity fundraiser. $5000 of the funds went to Welcome to Chinatown’s longevity fund, which turned into a monetary grant for the Double Crispy Bakery in Manhattan Chinatown.
$10000 of the funds went to Welcome to Chinatown’s sik fan fund. This fund bought 1000 hot meals from local Manhattan Chinatown businesses to help #supportsmallbusiness. Welcome to Chinatown gifted the meals to low-income, food-poor older adults, neighbors, and food responders throughout Manhattan Chinatown.
SAB member were super creative. Sharon Yeung of @sparklecakerie made assorted cupcakes and raffled off prizes like a one-to-one baking Zoom class or custom cake toppers. Owen Li of @asianmunchies sold his homemade XO hot sauces and donated over $200 to SAB’s #BakeInSolidarity Fundraiser. Jenny Lu of @flours_and_stuff raised over $2000 selling over 200 jars of cute homemade meringue cookies!
Hundreds of SAB members also posted their Asian baking creations and used the hashtag #BakeInSolidarity to show their support for helping #stopAsianHate and standing in solidarity with the AAPI and BIPOC communities. For the baking collaboration, Olives and Lamb baked Bolo Bao (pineapple buns) and Natalie Home Creations baked a beautiful pandan chiffon cake.
Today, SAB continues to raise money to help #stopAsianHate. SAB’s founder, Kat Lieu, has written a cookbook, Modern Asian Baking at Home, and pledges to donate portions of proceeds from sales of the book to help uplift Asian communities and to continue to help #stopasianhate.
This Halloween, SAB is hosting a global baking challenge #SABBakeOff where bakers around the world are invited to enter subtly Asian Halloween-themed baked goodies and use the #hashtag #SABBakeOff. Every tag equals $2 donated to the Gofundme AAPI Community fund, and SAB is committed to donating up to $300. Bakers are encouraged and welcomed to host and run bake sales and donate to the fund as well.
